An Urban Center Isolated from the World

After maintaining the city under encirclement for approximately two years, from August the RSF advanced to reinforce its control and blockade the leftover civilian population.

Space-based imagery demonstrate that fighters began to build a massive berm - a raised dirt embankment - around the perimeter of the city, closing roads and blocking relief supplies.

During the encirclement worsened, seventy-eight civilians were slain in an paramilitary attack on a mosque on 19 September, while the UN said 53 additional were killed in drone and cannon bombardments on a makeshift community in the autumn.

An elderly man wearing a white tunic remained by himself amongst the corpses. The man looked to gaze as a fighter armed with a weapon walked along the staircase facing him. pointing his weapon, the shooter fired a one bullet at the individual, who dropped to the floor lifeless.

"How come is this one even living," another combatant shouted. "Execute him."

One observer who provided testimony said he had seen "many of our kin being killed - they were gathered in one place and all eliminated."

Militia Officers Try to Conduct Damage Control

In the days that ensued from the killings, paramilitary chief conceded that his troops had committed "violations" and announced the events would be investigated.

Part of the detained was following a investigation recording his killings. Deliberately staged and edited footage published on the militia's formal Telegram platform reveal the individual being led into a detention area at a prison on the perimeter of el-Fasher.

Meanwhile, the militia and connected social media channels started seeking to reshape the account.

Posts depicting its combatants distributing supplies to inhabitants were shared by several individuals, while the paramilitary's media office released multiple recordings allegedly to display the proper treatment of military captives.
