The key central region separating the country's Darfur areas and the Khartoum-Riverine region has over recent weeks become the recent fighting area in the extended civil war between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary forces. Substantial Exodus Statistics An estimated 36,825 people escaped five localities in North Kordofan province between 26 October and 31 October, as reported by the International Organization for Migration. The civilians, primarily walking, moved toward Tawila, a town west of El Fasher that is currently accommodating more than 652,000 displaced people. Increased Troop Concentration Local inhabitants of North Kordofan on Monday noted a significant increase in both RSF and army concentration across communities throughout the state. Both forces are contesting control of El Obeid, the North Kordofan state capital and a important strategic and command hub that joins Darfur to Khartoum. "Today, all our forces have converged on the Bara front here," said an RSF member in a recently circulated video statement. Area Citizens Detail Safety Fears A local inhabitant of Um Smeima, located west of El Obeid, described that the amount of RSF vehicles had risen substantially since the group's seizure of El Fasher. "We stopped going to our farms, concerned about clashes," the individual commented. Another inhabitant, who requested anonymity for safety concerns, also indicated that "there has been a big increase in army vehicles and weapons west and south of El Obeid" over the last fourteen days. World Warnings and Requests A senior UN official expressed concerns last week about "extensive crimes" and "ethnic-based retaliations" by RSF in Bara. The representative warned of patterns comparable to patterns in Darfur, where RSF fighters have been alleged to commit mass killings, sexual violence and abductions against certain racial groups. The spiritual head on Sunday called for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of relief routes in Sudan, stating that attacks on civilians and obstacles to humanitarian aid "are producing unacceptable suffering." Sudan's ambassador to Egypt on Sunday alleged RSF of perpetrating war crimes in El Fasher and stated that the Sudanese government would not discuss with the armed faction. The diplomat further called on the international community to classify the group as a terrorist group.
