American Online Personality Penalized After Mass E-Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW authorities have issued a fine against an American social media personality and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation after a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of around 40 individuals riding electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," stated a senior police official the officer on the following day.

Law enforcement said they did not chase right away the group out of concerns for public safety but rather found the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

Later in the week, police announced they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a penalty of $562 and three demerit points each, connected to the bridge incident. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4m followers on one platform and over 1.2 million on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper recently following the event gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the rules and standards of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, basically, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of e-bikes on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," the minister said. "We must make sure we prevent these things entering the country [and] officers are granted the powers to crack down, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. But, in the first seven months of 2025, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
