A minimum of 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
